New to chiropractic?

Chiropractic is an alternative health care profession that focuses on diagnosis and treatment of disorders affecting the musculoskeletal and nervous systems, such as back pain, neck pain, pain in the joints of the arms or legs, and headaches. Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs), or chiropractors, employ a wide range of diagnostic skills, including X-ray or MRI when warranted, and practice a hands-on approach for assessing and treating these musculoskeletal conditions. Chiropractors also offer therapeutic and rehabilitative exercises, as well as nutrition and healthy lifestyle counseling. In some cases, chiropractic care alone may not be suitable for your condition, in which case a ready referral to the appropriate health care provider will be given. Chiropractors can effectively treat patients of all ages, including babies and children and the elderly, with gentle adjustments.

“The most common therapeutic procedure performed by doctors of chiropractic is known as “spinal manipulation,” also called “chiropractic adjustment.” The purpose of manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become hypomobile – or restricted in their movement – as a result of a tissue injury. Tissue injury can be caused by a single traumatic event, such as improper lifting of a heavy object, or through repetitive stresses, such as sitting in an awkward position with poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. In either case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for the sufferer. Manipulation, or adjustment of the affected joint and tissues, restores mobility, thereby alleviating pain and muscle tightness, and allowing tissues to heal.” (American Chiropractic Association, 2011)

Most conditions are effectively treated over 4-12 sessions. Treatment may cause mild discomfort but should not cause pain.

Your First Visit

Privacy Practices

The first visit lasts about an hour, and allows time for the doctor to hear your complete medical history and identify problem areas needing to be addressed during the physical exam and treatment. If you have pain, we’ll talk about where it is located, when it started, and what activities make it better or worse. Your blood pressure and reflexes will also be measured. The physical examination will generally be performed through light clothing – it is recommended that you wear or bring clothes that are comfortable and loose fitting. The exam may include observation of posture and range of motion and palpation of muscles, joint movement, and soft tissues. Most often, treatment is offered at this first appointment, but it is sometimes necessary to first order X-rays, MRI, and/or other diagnostic tests, which can take a few days. Subsequent appointments take less time, usually 20-30 minutes.
